Is Your Chevy Having Electrical Problems?

Modern vehicles are an intricate combination of electrical and mechanical parts. If your electrical components run into trouble, your car will quickly stop functioning properly. Here are some common electrical problems a car might experience. For most of these issues, it's best to have a trusted technician at your local Chevy dealership to take a look. Faulty Alternator The heart of your car's electrical power is your alternator. This component converts the mechanical energy of your engine into electricity to power every other electrical component of your car, including the ignition coils inside the engine. more Alternators usually last a good seven to ten years, but a few things can cause them to break down earlier, such as leaking fluid, an overly tight serpentine belt, or a bad accessory that overloads it. If your alternator runs into trouble, the battery might take up the slack for a while, but pretty soon, all your electrical accessories will stop working. Without sufficient power for your spark plugs, your engine will falter too. Aging Battery The alternator charges the battery, which provides electrical power to the car when the engine's turned off. Every time your engine runs, your battery should fully charge up. If it fails to do so, then it might be on its last legs. Car batteries usually last three or four years but can become damaged by extreme temperatures or corrosion. If you can't start your car one morning, your battery probably doesn't have any juice. To know if the problem lies with the battery or the alternator, jump-start your car. If the engine dies again shortly after, then it your alternator is to blame it's not providing enough power to keep the engine going or recharge your battery. Failing Electronics A serious electrical problem will cause most of your accessories to fail. Your headlights and other lights will lose brightness and then die. Your dashboard might turn dark, and your air conditioning will also stop working. A single accessory failing indicates a problem with that part alone, but many accessories faltering together indicates a larger underlying electrical problem. Fuses Blowing Out Just like your house, your car has a fuse box designed to protect individual components from sudden electrical surges. Again, if one fuse blows, it might not be a big deal. But if fuses keep blowing, then you have more serious underlying issue that requires the attention of a technician. Burning Plastic Electrical malfunctions can sometimes melt the plastic insulation around connections and wiring. A burning plastic smell often points to electrical issues, especially if this smell is accompanied by failing lights and other accessory problems. Your Chevy Dealer Finds an Electrical Flaw During periodical vehicle inspections at your local dealership, technicians will use tools to plug into the onboard diagnostics port of your car. They can then collect data from your car's onboard computer and its many sensors and use this information to diagnose problems. This helps them to find and repair electrical issues. Have your car's electronics inspected today at Randy Wise Chevrolet. We're an award-winning dealership dedicated to delivering a top-notch customer experience.

3 Signs Your Chevy Needs a New Catalytic Converter

Combustion produces the energy that moves your car, but it also produces dangerous chemicals in the process. Your catalytic converter is designed to convert these chemicals into harmless ones. Age or damage can cause problems for the converter, and even cause it to fail. As your Chevy dealer, we can repair or replace your converter for you. These are some of the signs your converter could be damaged. more 3 Signs You Need a New Catalytic Converter From Your Chevy Dealer Acceleration Lag When you step on the gas pedal, you expect your Chevy to almost leap forward. If your car feels more like it's lurching than leaping, you could have a converter problem. The reduced acceleration is due to back pressure created in the engine by a blocked converter. As the converter works, carbon will slowly build up and partially or completely block the converter. If the exit from the converter is blocked, the converted gases will be forced back into your engine. These gases increase the pressure in the engine, which reduces your engine power. To overcome this pressure, you'll need to increase your speed, and this increases fuel consumption. Our technicians will examine your converter and clear any blockage we find. Your acceleration lag will then disappear. Strong Sulfur Smell A foul rotten egg smell from your exhaust means that your converter has failed. The sulfur smell comes from hydrogen sulfide, a corrosive and toxic chemical created during combustion. When your converter works correctly, hydrogen sulfide is changed into odorless and harmless sulfur dioxide. Your exhaust smoke will turn black due to the presence of unburnt and unconverted fuel molecules. The converter can fail for several reasons, including age, damage from a blocked air filter, or a failed sensor. If you continue driving when your converter is damaged, you could receive a citation for the excessive amount of pollution from your exhaust. Our technicians will need to examine your engine and the converter to find the cause of the problem. Check Engine Light An illuminated check engine light has often been used as a joke in TV shows, but it's no laughing matter. This light only comes on when a problem is detected in your engine. The lights connect to a network of sensors in your car that monitor every important component. If any of these sensors notice a problem with their component, the light will illuminate. A converter problem can trigger this light due to its failure to convert the engine gases. Your computer will generate an error code, and our technicians will check the error code to find the cause of the problem. A damaged or blocked converter could damage your engine. Call us today at Randy Wise Chevrolet, and we'll fix the problem.

3 Benefits of Getting a Tire Rotation for Your Chevy

Over 11,000 crashes occur each year because of tire failure. If you fail to properly maintain your tires, you're putting yourself at risk, no matter how safe a driver you are. One key procedure for proper tire maintenance is regular tire rotation. The following are three good reasons to visit your local Chevy dealer soon to have your tires swapped around. more Slow Down Tread Wear A staggering 4,900 fatal road accidents are caused by cars skidding on slippery roads each year. A factor in many of these crashes is insufficient tread depth. The minimum recommended tread depth is 2/32 of an inch in the warmer months and 5/32 of an inch in winter. It's unwise to let your tire become thinner than this. Responsible drivers keep an eye on their treads and do what they can to slow the wear. One way to do so is with periodical tire rotation, which spreads the wear more evenly across all four tires and prevents one or two tires from wearing down significantly quicker. Reduce Chances of Blowouts If the fore or aft of your car is slightly heavier, or your wheels are minutely misaligned, then one or two wheels are bearing a greater brunt of the vehicle's weight and pressure. This makes them more susceptible to damage from potholes, curbs, and bits of metal on the road. Needless to say, more damaged tires are more at risk of blowing out. So it's safer to have your tires rotated often, which shares the pressure evenly. While rotating your tires, the technician will also examine the rubber closely and find any damage you might have missed. Keep Steering Responsive Uneven tires reduce handling and responsiveness to a surprising degree. This diminishes your reaction time and sense of control. Regular rotation is the primary way to avoid this danger and keep your handling smooth. During the procedure, not only will the technician examine your tires for damage, but they'll also identify underlying causes of uneven tire wear. This might be misaligned wheels, as previously mentioned. It might also be under-inflated or overinflated tires. How a Chevy Dealer Rotates Your Tires After raising your vehicle and inspecting your tires and wheels, the technician will swap your tires in one of three patterns, depending on your vehicle. For four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive cars, they carry out a rearward cross, bringing the rear tires to the forward axle and the front tires to the rear axle, crossing over only the latter two tires. For rear-wheel drives, an X-cross is often carried out, which diagonally swaps all four tires. Alternatively, they'll do a forward cross, which is the exact opposite of a rearward cross. Either pattern will solve uneven wear until your next rotation. To have experienced technicians rotate your tires today, visit Randy Wise Chevrolet. We're a family-owned and run dealership dedicated to providing the region's Chevy drivers with nothing short of top-notch customer service, whatever your vehicle needs may be.
