It's caused by the breakdown of the chemicals in your battery. Sulfuric acid is one of the main chemicals in your battery, but as time passes, it starts to decay. Sulfuric acid releases hydrogen gas, and hydrogen molecules are small enough to escape the battery casing and float into your engine compartment. The hydrogen molecules merge with sulfur molecules produced by the fuel in your engine. These two chemicals produce hydrogen sulfide, which has a characteristic rotten egg smell. Hydrogen sulfide is poisonous and corrosive, and it's drawn to the battery terminals. This gas will form an acidic salt around the terminals, and start to eat them. Once corrosion has started, your battery will need replacement. Old Battery Your battery contains a variety of chemicals, and these chemicals enable it to store electricity and recharge. Unfortunately, the chemical reactions that allow the battery to work will eventually destroy the battery. Chemicals slowly break down, and as they do, your battery will become slower and more difficult to recharge. Its maximum charging level will also drop as the battery slowly decays. These signs of wear will start to affect your car's operation. Your battery is needed to provide the power to start your engine. As its recharging ability drops, it will have difficulty summoning enough power to provide the charge to the starter motor. This is what happens when you turn the key or press the button, and you hear your engine trying and failing to start. Dim Lights The battery supplies power to your car's internal systems like the headlights, clock, and other accessories. This allows these systems to work when the engine is off. As a battery wears down, it will have less power to sustain these systems. If you notice your dash and interior lights seem to be dim, your battery could be failing. You can test your battery by noting the brightness of these lights under battery power. Then turn on your engine and check the lights. If the lights are brighter, your battery is probably weak. Tires are vital for maintaining control when you drive. They grip the surface with the tread and ensure your Chevy handles just like it's designed to. Tires, however, are made from rubber and will eventually wear out. As your Chevy dealer, we'd like to tell you some signs that you may need new tires from us. more Your Tires Are Out of Warranty All major tire manufacturers place a warranty period on their tires. This warranty period is determined in consultation with their engineers and represents the optimum lifespan of a tire. To maintain the warranty, you need to have your tires rotated regularly to prevent excessive wear. Once the warranty period is up, their recommendation is to replace your tires. You may, however, not want to replace your tires when the warranty expires if they still appear to be in good condition. If you continue to drive on these tires, we advise that you bring your Chevy to our service department. Our Chevy-trained technicians can test the tire to confirm they're safe for you to drive on. If one or more of the tires shows signs of wear, we can fit replacements for you. Bulge in the Sidewall The sidewall of your tires is the rubber section that is perpendicular to the tread. This section of a tire is made from thinner and softer rubber than the tread. It doesn't need the extra reinforcing the tread has, as it's not subject to abrasion from contact with the surface. The sidewall can still get damaged, and this can weaken your tire. A bulge in the sidewall is usually created through sharp contact with a hard surface, for example hitting a curb. The force of the blow pinches the tire and forces air into the damaged section, which then swells up. This bulge is dangerous, as it's full of air and stretches the surface of the tire. If the tire gets too hot, the bulge could rupture, and your tire will blow. We recommend replacing a bulging tire ASAP. Your Tire Pressure Is Low You may notice that your tires lose air regularly. This loss of air is minor. It's caused by the atmosphere in the tires equalizing with the outside atmosphere. The solution to this is to top up the air to your tire's recommended air pressure. If your tires are losing air much faster, you could have a tire leak. A leak in a tire can easily cause a flat. Air can leak from even the smallest hole in a tire and rapidly deflate it. Engine problems can be scary for any driver. Fortunately, if you're near Flint, MI, your friendly Chevy dealer can help you. These are samples of some of the problems that can occur, and we can fix any of them for you. more Damaged Oxygen Sensors Your car has numerous sensors, and each sensor is attached to an important component. These sensors provide information for your car's computer and monitor their attached component for signs of trouble. The sensors can detect even the smallest inconsistency with their attached component, and relay this to the computer. Sensors can, unfortunately, fail. The oxygen sensors in your exhaust, for example, can wear out. These sensors monitor the amount of air in the engine and the exhaust smoke. The sensor's information is used by your car's computer to determine the fuel-air mix in the engine. If these sensors relay wrong information, the fuel-air mix will be incorrect, and your car will use more fuel. We can check and replace any damaged sensors. Worn Spark Plugs The spark plugs' job is to ignite the fuel-air mix in the cylinders. Air and fuel will mix in the intake manifold. When the sensors in the manifold detect that the mix is correct, this mix will be injected into the cylinders. The fuel-air mix is highly compressed and finally ignited by the spark plugs. This ignition creates a controlled explosion in the cylinder, and the explosions in the cylinders enable your car to move. In time, spark plugs can burn out, or be damaged by the failure of other components. If your spark plugs aren't working correctly, you'll experience misfiring and even stalling. Our technicians will check and test each spark plug, and replace any damaged ones. Once the spark plugs are working again, your engine performance will increase. Dirty Air Filter The air filter in your car filters out dust and dirt from the air to prevent this debris from entering your engine. The air filter box is located just behind the radiator grille, and it screens air before it enters the engine. The filter, however, will eventually fill up with dirt and prevent air from entering your engine. As we saw above, clean air is vital for effective combustion. If your engine lacks air due to a blocked air filter, there will be too much fuel in the intake manifold. The abundance of fuel makes combustion more difficult, as your spark plugs need air to ignite. The fuel-rich atmosphere in your engine can also damage the spark plugs and make combustion even less efficient.
