2026 Chevrolet Equinox vs. Nissan Kicks

In the compact SUV class, the dominant 2026 Chevrolet Equinox has several competitors, including the Nissan Kicks. And while it is a worthy rival, it can’t keep pace with the Chevy Equinox in the categories of powertrain, cabin space, and ruggedness. Randy Wise Chevrolet takes a closer look.
Powertrain
In the category of power, the Chevy Equinox has a distinct edge over the Nissan Kicks. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine equipped on the new Chevy SUV achieves 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the Nissan Kicks outputs just 140 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. Also, while both SUVs offer all-wheel drive (AWD), the Chevy model has a huge advantage in terms of towing. Its tow capacity is 1,500 lbs, while the Nissan Kicks is not rated for towing.
Cabin Space
On the subject of cabin space, these two SUVs are closer than in the powertrain category. However, the Chevrolet Equinox still has the edge, offering 63.5 cubic feet of max cargo volume, compared to 60.0 cubic feet for the Nissan Kicks. The Chevy Equinox also boasts more headroom: 40.0 inches in front and 39.2 inches in the back, versus the Nissan Kicks and its 39.7 inches in front and 38.5 inches in the back. In terms of front legroom, the Nissan model does have a slight edge, at 42.7 inches versus 40.9 inches. However, the Chevy SUV more than makes up the difference in the second row, where its 39.9 inches of legroom far exceeds the 34.5 inches of the Kicks.
Ruggedness and Capability
What the Nissan Kicks possesses in style and features, it lacks in ruggedness/off-road capability. On the flipside, the Chevy Equinox is stylish, well-equipped, and offers a specific trim that excels in the ruggedness category: the Chevy Equinox ACTIV. When you test drive it at our Flint, MI Chevy dealership, you’ll see firsthand its rugged amenities. Special exterior styling, exclusive 17-inch machined wheels with all-terrain tires, and a uniquely-tuned suspension are a foundation for adventure.
