How do I know when it's time to come in for an oil change?

Keeping a close eye on the status of your vehicle's engine oil is crucial to sustaining the lifespan of your engine. Modern lubricants most engines use today recommend an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, while some full-synthetic motor oil will go as far as 15,000 miles in between services, but Contacting Us and the expert technicians at Randy Wise Chevrolet will be your best bet of keep your vehicle in top performing conditions. Our technicians suggest the following signs to look out for and to know when it's time to Schedule Your Service Appointment:

  • The engine oil is dark/dirty/murky.
  • Clean motor oil is amber in color, when it gets to the point that it is almost black, it's time to schedule an oil change.

  • Hearing loud engine noises.
  • Oil prevents metal-on-metal contact, so you might hear louder sounds or even knocking coming from your engine if your oil has started to break down.

  • "Change Oil" and "Check Engine" lights are on.
  • We suggest to rely on these lights simply as indicators that something might be wrong, and follow with checking the oil yourself with the dipstick to see the status of its color.

  • There is a strong smell present.
  • If there is an oil leak, you may detect a stronger smell in the cabin.

Oil Life System

Many of today's vehicles are equipped with an Oil Life Monitoring System (OLMS). This system interprets your vehicle's speed and engine temperature and continuously monitors operating conditions, which helps determine when it's time for an oil change.

The OLMS monitors a number of conditions, including engine revolutions, engine temperature, and miles driven to let you know precisely when to come in for an oil change. As soon as you notice your vehicle's OLS light illuminate, it's time for service.

Checking Your Oil Level

Even with an OLS, it's important to keep track of your oil level. Always consult your vehicle's Owner's Manual Owner's Manual for the proper procedure to check your oil level. You'll get a more accurate dipstick reading by following those instructions.

Oil Change Warning Signs

When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message displays, service is required for your vehicle as soon as possible. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the OLMS must be reset. The Certified Service experts at your dealer will do this.

If your vehicle is not equipped with an OLMS, consult your Service and Maintenance Schedule contained within your vehicle's Owner's Manual for proper change intervals.

A quick inspection will determine your vehicle's remaining oil life percentage (applicable to vehicles with the GM Oil Life Monitoring System). This may be helpful, especially if you are approaching your next oil change.
